Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join the Engineering and Material Sciences group in Boston, MA. The successful candidate will be a highly productive, results-oriented individual, able to multi-task and generate and implement original ideas that contribute to the successful development, and scale-up of drug substance candidates. Strong communication, organization, and planning skills and a high level of technical aptitude and creativity are required for success in this position.
Key Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
Work in an interdisciplinary team composed of chemists, engineers, and analytical scientists to develop and demonstrate viable, multi-step, organic syntheses for the manufacture of small-molecule intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Conceive, execute and interpret synthetic organic chemistry and engineering-based laboratory experiments with a high degree of reliability and independence.
Multitask to manage multiple experimental priorities, conduct experimental troubleshooting, and prioritize laboratory work to meet technical deliverables and timelines.
Assist in the development of novel and creative solutions to overcome scale-up and manufacturing problems
Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
Proven communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills: contribute to the writing of internal reports and presentations, and present findings at cross-functional team meetings.
Experience interacting with CRO/CMO organizations would be beneficial
MS in Chemical Engineering or Organic Chemistry with 0 – 4 years of relevant experience in a laboratory engineering or process chemistry environment.
BS in Chemical Engineering or Organic Chemistry with 4+ years of relevant experience in a laboratory engineering or process chemistry environment.
Hands-on experience in a pharmaceutical development laboratory environment, as well as capability and desire to understand, develop, and scale-up chemical processes
Working knowledge of common laboratory instrumentation (HPLC, NMR, GC, etc.)
Experience with statistical design of experiments and common scientific software desired.
