Job Description:

Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join the Engineering and Material Sciences group in Boston, MA. The successful candidate will be a highly productive, results-oriented individual, able to multi-task and generate and implement original ideas that contribute to the successful development, and scale-up of drug substance candidates. Strong communication, organization, and planning skills and a high level of technical aptitude and creativity are required for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team composed of chemists, engineers, and analytical scientists to develop and demonstrate viable, multi-step, organic syntheses for the manufacture of small-molecule intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Conceive, execute and interpret synthetic organic chemistry and engineering-based laboratory experiments with a high degree of reliability and independence.
  • Multitask to manage multiple experimental priorities, conduct experimental troubleshooting, and prioritize laboratory work to meet technical deliverables and timelines.
  • Assist in the development of novel and creative solutions to overcome scale-up and manufacturing problems
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Proven communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills: contribute to the writing of internal reports and presentations, and present findings at cross-functional team meetings.
  • Experience interacting with CRO/CMO organizations would be beneficial


  • MS in Chemical Engineering or Organic Chemistry with 0 – 4 years of relevant experience in a laboratory engineering or process chemistry environment.
  • BS in Chemical Engineering or Organic Chemistry with 4+ years of relevant experience in a laboratory engineering or process chemistry environment.
  • Hands-on experience in a pharmaceutical development laboratory environment, as well as capability and desire to understand, develop, and scale-up chemical processes
  • Working knowledge of common laboratory instrumentation (HPLC, NMR, GC, etc.)
  • Experience with statistical design of experiments and common scientific software desired.
