Vertex Pharmaceuticals is searching for a highly motivated and creative bench scientist with strong experience in electrophysiology to join our Research team located in Boston, MA. The successful applicant will join and contribute to a highly collaborative team that designs, implements, and interprets in vitro electrophysiological assays. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing in vitro patch clamp recordings to examine ion-channel function. Successful applicants should have outstanding experimental skills, and be sufficiently advanced to work independently on the design and execution of experiments. The applicant will be part of a fast-paced drug discovery team. Good communication and people skills are required in order to work effectively with colleagues from cross-functional disciplines.
Design, perform, analyze and critically interpret in vitro patch clamp recordings including whole-cell, cell-attached, inside out and outside out.
Capture and analyze cell morphology.
Identify and implement innovative approaches to gain added functional insight into compound-target engagement
Present data to research teams and site leadership in a clear and compelling manner
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Cellular Physiology, Biophysics or related scientific discipline and minimum of 4-6 years of experience in electrophysiology and assay development
Strong technical background in in vitro patch clamp recordings is required
Strong knowledge with ion channel structure function
Experience with single channel recordings.
Experience with cell culture and/or ex vivo tissue slices.
Experience with high-throughput robotic platforms is a plus.
Excellent troubleshooting and multi-tasking skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently are required.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a highly-collaborative team environment
